Telluride

Nestled – and Telluride is moreso than any other ski town, sitting in a box canyon less than a mile wide – in the picturesque San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado, Telluride is a seven hour drive from Denver and inarguably the least accessible of Colorado’s world-class ski resorts.  The good news?  Venture off the well-trodden path (a.k.a. I-70) and you will be graciously rewarded by open (and free!) parking spots, line-less lifts, open runs, and uncrowded restaurants.  While 2,000 acres of skiable terrain may sound unimpressive compared to eastern-lying behemoths Vail and Aspen, Telluride’s vertical drop of 4,425’ and unmatched terrain more than compensate.  And with 200 acres of expanded hike-tos opening this season in addition to year-old Revelation Bowl (voted “best new ski terrain” in the state by Conde Nast), rest assured you will not get bored.

Don’t Miss

Where to begin?  See Forever is a must-do for all levels, providing stunning views of the gorgeous San Juan Mountains from over 12,500’ and providing equally spectacular views as it winds its way down to mid-mountain.  More advanced skiers can entertain themselves for days exploring Prospect Bowl (serviced by Lift 12) and Gold Hill (Lift 14).  For bragging rights, ski or ride La Rosa, one of the ten steepest trails in North America according to locals.

Where to Eat Lunch

Located next to the top of Lift 9, Giuseppe’s  serves up soup, sandwiches, beer, wine, and much more.  A bowl of chili and views of Utah’s La Sal Mountains at almost 12,000’.  Does it  get any better?
Trade your boots for a pair of cozy slippers and enjoy the best burger you’ll ever have at 9545, located in Mountain Village near the Top of Lift 1.  A variety of delicious soups, salads, and sandwiches are available for the more cholesterol-conscious diner.

Parking

If you’re staying in Telluride or Mountain Village, chances are you will not need to drive to the mountain.  If you’re coming in for the day, Carhenge at West Pacific Street has a limited number of free all-day spots reserved for skiers and riders and is mere feet from the base of Lift 7.  Free parking in Mountain Village is available at the Free Gondola Parking Lot and the Meadows Run Parking Lot.
